The much-praised and long-awaited film “99 Homes” opened in October. The film is a fast-paced thriller that takes a hard look at the brutal reality of the foreclosure crisis. Audiences and critics have praised the film, particularly the performances of Andrew Garfield, Michael Shannon and Laura Dern, and the writing and direction of Ramin Bahrani.
The film focuses on foreclosures, abuses by mortgage servicers, and the damage done to the economy during the financial crisis. Tangible evidence of that damage remains in most towns and cities in the form of empty, deteriorated homes owed by the banks and Fannie Mae.
In honor of the film’s release, the Housing Justice Foundation has compiled photos of 99 Abandoned Homes in Palm Beach County, Florida. We urge individuals and groups in towns and cities across the country to compile similar photo collections of 99 Abandoned Homes in every city and county and post the collections online, to raise awareness for the decaying shadow inventory and hold foreclosing entities responsible for these seized properties.
